Herning is a town build upon the manor Herningsholm which was built in 1579, when Denmark was an autocracy, at the old army road from Jelling to Herning. The village Herning is dated back to 1682 when it consisted of nine farms related to Herningsholm.

The area was poor and sparsely populated and peasants and shepherds subsisted by wool production, where they through centuries refined their technics and use before the handicraft developed into a comprehensive textile industry in and around Herning.

At the end of the 19th century, the expansion of Herning went fast. Herning got a church and courthouse and the enterprising John Eyde's inn at the town square quickly became a gathering place for the city and the business travelers, which meant that Herning at the beginning of the 20th century got status as a traditional market town.
